The Brangelina appearance at the 12-day filmfest briefly swept Cannesī more high-brow fare off centre-stage, this year showcasing a trend for highly-relevant political movies. On the arthouse front in Cannes, of the films competing for the festivalīs top Palme dīOr prize, the most applauded by critics to date was Turkeyīs "Three Monkeys" by Nuri Bilge Ceylan, a tale set around family tension. The other three competition films already screened have all touched on politically or socially-relevant themes and been well-received: "Blindness" by Brazilīs Fernando Meirelles, "Waltz with Bashir," an animated documentary by Israelīs Ari Folman, and "Lionīs Den" by Argentinian Pablo Trapero.
